Star Wars fans are about to melt down because some highly desirable art is about to be made available but in rather small amounts which means… “good luck to all who try!”
Alice X. Zhang (also known as AliceXZ) is a Chinese-American illustrator and fine artist known for her expressive, emotive portraits. Her clients throughout the years have included Marvel, BBC Worldwide (Doctor Who, Sherlock), DC Films, Naughty Dog (The Last of Us: Part II), Team Liquid, and Disney Books (Powers of a Girl).
Alice had the honor of creating the art for all the badges for Star Wars Celebration 2023. The art featured 20 characters from the Star Wars universe in a massive mosaic. The mosaic was then broken up and these characters were used as the badges for the convention.
Sets of these images were sold as postcard sets at the convention and they sold out every single day leaving many fans longing to get their own copies. Well Bottleneck Gallery in New York is about to make some Star Wars fans very happy.
This Friday, October 13, this art will be onsale at Bottleneck Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. The gallery is hosting a showcase exhibit of Alice’s art from 6-8 p.m. Here is what they have to say about the event.
“Alice’s newest showcases features a wealth of limited edition prints, including Alice’s work from Star Wars Celebration. Star Wars Celebration is a massive recurring event filled with all things Star Wars, including roadmaps for future series, jaw-dropping trailers for upcoming projects, and a multitude of events for fans and creators alike. Alice created a trove of officially licensed art for Lucasfilm and Disney, and we’re excited to be able to offer some of that in this showcase!”
Here is what Alice had to say about this massive project from the official Star Wars website.
“Well, it has absolutely been a huge honor! I have never been to a Celebration, but when I was first approached and researched the history of Celebration badges, I was immediately inspired — not to mention, portraits are my favorite illustration subject,” she tells StarWars.com. “So, it was exciting for me to take this on, and I really wanted to do a memorable job.”
“I knew that Celebration has had a long tradition of commissioning a single illustrator to create the art on each badge, and that many collect the badges,” Zhang says. “I wanted to do something unique to ‘link’ the set together, like an Easter egg for those collectors!”
Though she can’t pick a favorite piece from the bunch, one moment sticks out during the review process. Zhang was told that longtime Ahsoka Tano storyteller Dave Filoni “personally approved of the Ahsoka piece, and that’s always lovely to hear.”
These giclée prints measure 12 x 16 inches and will cost you $50 each. They are being offered in editions from 150-250 so as we mentioned, SOME fans will walk away very happy, multitudes of others…. not so much. Alice’s showcase opens this Friday, October 13th from 6PM – 8PM ET. We STRONGLY recommend that you get in line early, VERY early… like today!
