Let’s face it, Walt Disney Studios has been a powerhouse for 100 years and has provided generations of die-hard fans with memories that last a lifetime. From the 1937 animated feature, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” to “Pinocchio“, “Bambi“, “Dumbo“, “Cinderella“, “Mary Poppins“, “Pete’s Dragon“, “The Rocketeer“, “Aladdin“, “Mulan” “Prey“, and countless others, their presence on the fabric of pop culture is undeniable.
Flash forward to the present and let us introduce you to Toronto based art director and artist Haley Turnbull. Haley is a certified Digital Marketer with a specialization in Social Media Marketing through the Digital Marketing Institute. She has worked with independent filmmakers, internationally recognized creative agencies, film distributors, non-profits, and businesses of all sizes. Some of her clients include The Criterion Collection, Second Sight Films, and the National Film Board of Canada. She is a published artist and her work has been recognized by media outlets like Inverse and Nerdist.
Haley is a BIG fan of Disney and has created a passion project that pays homage to the soundtracks for many of her favorite Disney films. Called “Walt Disney Records: The Legacy Collection” she has re-imagined art for vinyl offerings and as a vinyl “enthusiast,” I’d GLADLY fork over some hard earned cash to have these in my vinyl collection. Here is a look at her work along with some words from her about the project.
“I started the series because I was re-watching a great documentary called ‘Waking Sleeping Beauty’ which is all about the history of Walt Disney Animation, specifically the period of the Disney Renaissance. The film focuses a lot on Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who were responsible for the songs for The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, and their process of creating those iconic songs.
I loved that behind the scenes content so much and thought to myself how great it would be to have a series of really deluxe collectors edition vinyls of the soundtracks that had things like lyric booklets and all of that ‘making of’ information included. I kept thinking about it and finally decided I’d just make them myself!”
We absolutely love each and every one of these and if we had to pick a favorite, it would ALMOST be impossible but as is the case in many of these situations, we default to “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” As you can see, the project is an elegant collision between passion and immense talent. The end result is a plethora of incredible art.
Good news is that this is just Phase 1. Recently, Haley announced that she is jumping back in the arena and starting work on Phase 2. Our fingers are crossed that she tackles one of our all-time favorite Disney films, the 1979 sci-fi classic, “The Black Hole.” (Please Haley, you’d make an old geek REALLY happy if you did.)
