Looks like it may be time to come up with a side hustle because we need to scratch up some additional funds for a trip to Japan this August. Why you ask? Well, there is going to be an outstanding Akira exhibit at Mixalive TOKYO in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. The exhibit runs from August 10th – 31st and will feature actual cells from 1988’s ‘Akira’ film that was Written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo.
Otomo wrote and illustrated the original, insanely popular post-apocalyptic Japanese manga series from 1982 through 1990. These cells were recently discovered at Otomo’s home. This is what he said about them on his OFFICIAL TWITTER page:
“I was looking for layouts and found a lot of cells. They were quite beautiful, so I thought I’d share them with you. Those are just the ones that happened to be stored in my house, not all of the scenes are included. But I think they are very valuable because they are 40 years old.”
Are you for real? These were just stored away at his home, away from adoring eyes since 1988? That is bonkers! What if they had been looked over and thrown away? What if his sprinkler system went off and destroyed them? What if there was an earthquake and they were lost forever under countless tons of rubble!!!? THANKFULLY, NONE of those things happened and fans will now get to sink their eyeballs into, what should be, some incredible art.
The two posters below will be available for sale at the “Akira Cel Exhibition” this August. Should our ‘side hustle’ not pan out, just know that we will be insanely jealous of all that get to attend this incredible event and bask in the glorious brilliance of Katsuhiro Otomo. Sound off below down in the comments if you too would like to go. Perhaps we can get a group rate or something…
